HEROGRID is a European research and innovation project funded by the Horizon Europe Programme (Project No. 101192630).

The project aims to develop and validate a new Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) concept for High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) powerlines, using self-powered IoT devices to monitor grid performance in real time.

By enabling smarter use of existing infrastructure, HEROGRID will help increase transmission capacity, reduce operational costs and support the large-scale integration of renewable energy into Europe’s electricity systems.

HEROGRID introduces a smart monitoring system for HTLS powerlines. Self-powered IoT sensors installed directly on the lines, that collect real-time data on temperature, sag and current flow.
These data feeds AI-based DLR models that continuously analyse and predict the performance of the grid.
The system provides operators with actionable insights to optimise power transmission, reduce losses, and anticipate demand peaks or congestion.

RESEARCH FOCUS

To achieve its objectives, HEROGRID focuses on three main technological areas:

  • AI-based DLR models specifically designed for HTLS powerlines, enabling accurate real-time monitoring and predictive control of grid performance.
  • Novel IoT sensor nodes capable of operating under the high-temperature and environmental conditions typical of HTLS lines.
  • Energy harvesting systems that ensure full power autonomy of the sensors, combining piezoelectric and thermoelectric harvesters with an integrated power management system.

Together, these innovations will provide the technological foundation for a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable European electricity grid.
